Unusual neuropathies, practical tips

Dr Katifi is a neurologist with a sub-specialty interest in peripheral nerve disorders. He developed a technique for assessing nerve root compression syndrome utilising neurophysiological methods, namely dermatomal evoked potentials. The work was awarded a PhD degree from the University of Southampton. Dr Katifi was the principal investigator for a multicentre trial in acute Guillain-Barre syndrome, and the use of methotrexate in CIDP. He has also undertaken research in thermal threshold testing in small fibre neuropathy.

His key achievements are:

• Developing neurophysiological tests to investigate patients with back pain and sciatica.
• Establishing regional clinics for peripheral nerve disorders at Southampton General Hospital.
• Programme director and STC chair in neurology.
• Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians.

An overview of cranial dural arteriovenous fistulas: lessons from the CONDOR consortium

Prof. Diederik Bulters is a consultant neurosurgeon specialising in vascular conditions. Clinically he performs the largest number of surgeries for aneurysms and AVMs annually in the UK and is past president of the British Neurovascular Group. He is highly active in research and has held grants from the NIHR, EPSRC, Innovate UK, MRC, European Union and Royal College of Surgeons and has been chief and principal investigator for many randomised trials of new drugs, cell therapies and surgical techniques.

His interest in unruptured aneurysms focuses on risk prediction, new imaging techniques to stratify risk, including vessel wall imaging and dynamic contrast enhanced imaging, and the influence of modifiable risk factors including aspirin, blood pressure and cholesterol. He is chief investigator for the ROAR study – the largest study of unruptured aneurysms in the world. His interest in SAH relates to the injury induced by haemoglobin and -omics approaches to understand the mechanisms underlying outcome and has developed the largest genetic database in the world to study the determinants of outcome after SAH.

Multiple Sclerosis: Practical tips for the general neurology clinic

Dr Furby is a consultant neurologist and clinical lead for the multiple sclerosis service at the Wessex Neurological Centre in Southampton. He completed his medical training at the University of Nottingham in 2001, and between 2005-2009 worked as research fellow at UCL and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, during which time he conducted research into the use of imaging markers for clinical trials in progressive multiple sclerosis and completed a PhD in Neuroscience on this subject.

Since 2013 Dr Furby has been working as consultant neurologist in Southampton with visits to the Isle of Wight twice a week for peripheral clinics. He has been clinical lead for the multiple sclerosis service in Wessex since June 2021.

Research updates in Wessex Neurological Centre

Prof. Kipps is a neurologist with a sub-specialty interest in cognitive disorders. He is the research lead for Huntington's disease for the South Coast Dendron Network, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight specialty group lead for neurosciences. He is also clinical director for the Mental Health, Dementia and Neurological Conditions Strategic Clinical Network.

Prof. Kipp's research interests include early onset dementia (those who develop a form of dementia before the age of 65) and Huntington's disease.

Epilepsy treatment updates and MHRA latest

Having wanted to be a neurologist since medical school, Dr Kinton did an SHO job including 3 months at the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy which sparked her interest in the management of epilepsy. She did a PhD in epilepsy genetics in UCL and then did registrar training in Southampton and Melbourne. Having taken a brief "gap 6 months" as a ski chalet chef, she then started as a consultant neurologist in Hampshire Hospitals with epilepsy clinics in Southampton in 2006.

Dr Kinton moved the general and acute neurology part of her job to Southampton in 2018. She is currently Wessex training programme director for neurology, trying to navigate the stormy seas of shape of training, a member of the neurology SCE board and Honorary Secretary of the Association of British Neurologists.

 

Management pathway for Atypical Parkinsonian syndromes

Dr Boyd Ghosh graduated from St. Bartholomew's and The Royal London Medical School in 2000. Junior medical posts were carried out in London, New Zealand and Bath. He was a Neurology clinical fellow in Frenchay (Bristol) before studying for a PhD in Cambridge with Professors James Rowe and John Hodges. Research during his PhD involved atypical Parkinsonian syndromes with a particular emphasis on cognition and imaging in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). He is currently a consultant neurologist in the Wessex Neurological Centre in Southampton and Salisbury hospitals, divisional clinical lead for R&D, care group clinical lead for medical neurosciences as well as honorary teacher at the University of Southampton. In addition, Dr Ghosh is currently president of the British Neuropsychiatric Association.

Dr Ghosh leads a specialist regional service for patients with atypical Parkinsonian syndromes, which includes Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Multiple System Atrophy, Corticobasal Syndrome as well as mimics. This is a multidisciplinary clinic jointly run with Luke Massey consultant neurologist and Jade Donnelly Clinical coordinator and highly specialised physiotherapist. The clinic collaborates with therapists in the community, ophthalmologists and the palliative care services. He has previously assisted the PSP Association in care pathway development and advised on several of their guides for health care professionals and is currently a member of their research committee and a trustee. He is Principal Investigator for commercial and academic studies investigating Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and other atypical Parkinsonian syndromes. He lectures and publishes on the subject and teaches for a national course – the Parkinson's masterclass.

Stroke guidelines update

Dr Richard Marigold MB BS BSc FRCP is a Consultant Stroke Physician at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). He trained at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital medical school and completed postgraduate medical education, in London, Oxford and Wessex and an advanced stroke fellowship at UHS and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. He was appointed as a consultant in 2014.

He has an interest in hyperacute stroke care, including emergency admissions, use of advanced imaging, thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. He is he clinical lead for stroke and NIHR Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre lead at UHS and runs an active research portfolio. Current studies include thrombectomy in medium vessel occlusion (ESCAPE-MeVO), stroke secondary prevention with a novel factor XIa inhibitor (OCEANIC-STROKE) and tenecteplase vs alteplase in stroke thrombolysis (ATTEST 2).

He is passionate about using technology to improve outcomes in patient care, is a former member of the Clinical Standards Committee of the British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP) and hosts and examines the MRCP on behalf of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh at UHS.

Plasma Exchange in Neurological disorders; Setting up a service

Dr Chinar Osman is consultant Neurologist with a sub-speciality interest in peripheral nerve disorders in Wessex Neurological Centre and Salisbury District General Hospital. She graduated at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2008 where she was awarded a scholarship for high academic ranking. She also attained first-class honours in Neuroscience Intercalated BSc (with a Principal's prize). She completed her specialist registrar training in neurology with a post-CCT fellowship in neuromuscular disorders at Wessex Neurological Centre.

She established the UK's first Neurology led-outpatient Plasma Exchange Service and is now the clinical lead for this service and the lead for the Neurology Immunoglobulin service in the South-East region. Dr Osman is actively involved in education; she is a lecturer at Southampton University, helps with the regional neurology registrar training days and is a currently a member of the Neurology SCE question writing committee. She is actively involved in various multi-centre international clinical trials for MMN and CIDP and is a member of the neuromuscular advisory group for the ABN.

OCT for neurologists

Ms Rashmi Akshikar is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust practising at the Western Eye Hospital at Marylebone and the Charing Cross Hospital at Hammersmith. She is a specialist in treating eye inflammation, cataract surgeries and managing complex retinal diseases.

A consultant eye surgeon with over 20 years of surgical and clinical experience, she provides specialist and personalised treatment for age related macular degeneration, a holistic management of diabetic eye disease including injections, implants and lasers. Being trained as an eye surgeon in the armed forces, Rashmi has extensive experience in treating trauma.

Rashmi has been involved in research for well over 2 decades and has a number of publications, trials and research projects to her credit. She regularly presents at international conferences and contributes to journals. She is a regional lead for ophthalmic local training and enjoys training young surgeons and clinicians.

How to train neurology SpRs in 2023

Dr Rebecca Redwood graduated from Oxford University and undertook neurology SpR training in the West London rotation before. She is a consultant neurologist with an interest in stroke medicine and has worked at Chelsea and Westminster & Imperial College Hospitals NSH trust since 2016. Dr Redwood is the West London Neurology Training Programme Director.

Is it Lymphoma?

Luke is a consultant neuroradiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and honorary clinical research fellow under the Division of Surgery and Cancer.

His main research interests are neuro-oncology and vascular imaging and he is co-lead of the translational brain tumour research group at Imperial College. Within neuro-oncology, Luke is particularly interested in the application of advanced, multiparametric intraoperative ultrasound in guiding brain tumour resection.

Judgement Day

Dr Kennedy qualified from Charing Cross Medical School in 1985 and subsequently trained as a neurologist at Atkinson Morley Hospital. His research used functional imaging and was carried out at the MRC Cyclotron Unit, Hammersmith Hospital and the Dementia Research Group, Institute of Neurology, Queen Square.

He was appointed to the consultant staff at The Chelsea and Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals in 1997 and is the clinical lead for neurology at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

He has areas of interest in all aspects of neurology, but particularly Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Parkinson's disease, and stroke.
